Common CPAP Problems and How to Avoid Them

When you live with sleep apnea, it can be quite frustrating. All you want to do is sleep through the night so you can feel well rested, but apnea gets in the way. That’s where CPAP therapy comes in. However, there are some common problems that can prevent CPAP therapy from being as effective as it needs to be. With that in mind, we’ve gathered some of the most common CPAP problems and how to avoid or overcome them. Whether you’re looking for a new mask or a new CPAP machine, CPAP Liquidators is your go-to source for all of your CPAP needs.

-Wrong Size or Style CPAP Mask

One of the most important components to successful CPAP therapy comes down to the mask that is used. If the mask doesn’t fit properly, it won’t form the seal that is necessary for CPAP therapy to work. This is tricky, because everyone’s face is shaped differently, so just because a mask works perfectly for someone else, it might not work for you. Masks come in a variety of styles and sizes, so it’s a good idea to try a different mask if you feel like the one you have doesn’t fit correctly. Whether that’s with a full face mask or a nasal pillow system will depend on how you sleep and what creates a good seal with your face.

You might have the right style of mask, but the size can have just as much effect on the seal. Just because a certain size in one style of mask doesn’t necessarily mean that size will be right for another style. Talk with your doctor or CPAP equipment supplier to get advice regarding adjusting and sizing your mask properly to get the best fit. You’ll know that it is fitted properly when it isn’t uncomfortable or painful to wear.

-Getting Used to It

It can be difficult to adjust to sleeping with something on your face. For some people, it can feel claustrophobic when they first start out. We recommend starting out just wearing the mask for short periods of time while you’re still awake while you’re watching TV or reading. Once you’ve gotten acclimated to that, add the mask and CPAP machine into the equation and run the machine while you’re awake. This will get you used to the feeling of how it operates. Once that feels comfortable, use the CPAP machine every time you sleep, even when it’s just a nap. You won’t be able to get used to using it if you’re only using it every once in a while. Give it a couple of weeks to see if your mask and pressure are right for you. If the claustrophobic feeling persists, a smaller nasal pillow system might work better for your needs.

-Tolerating Forced Air

The feeling of forced air can be uncomfortable when beginning CPAP treatment. If you’ve had trouble tolerating forced air in your treatment, use a machine that has a ramp feature. That starts the air pressure at a low level and gradually increases it to your prescribed level as you sleep. Your doctor will be able to adjust the rate that it ramps up to something that suits your needs.

If the ramp feature does not solve your issue, discuss with your doctor the possibility of changing to a machine that automatically and constantly adjusts the air pressure while you sleep. There are models that will adjust pressure based on your breathing pattern automatically. BiPAP machines, for instance, increase air pressure when you breathe in and reduce pressure when you breathe out.

-Dry or Stuffy Nose

When a mask is ill-fitting, it will cause air to leak out. As that happens, it will cause your nose to dry out. If you’re consistently adjusting and re-adjusting the straps on your mask, that means the mask doesn’t fit properly and won’t form a stable seal. If your mask does fit, but you still encounter this issue, a CPAP machine with a heated humidifier can help prevent your from nose getting dried out or becoming stuffy. A nasal saline spray can also help alleviate these issues. Other issues that can arise when a mask doesn’t fit properly are skin irritation and pressure sores. Consult your doctor if any of these issues continue after adjusting your mask.

-Removing Mask Unintentionally

As you sleep, you might toss and turn through the night. When this happens, you might unintentionally remove your mask while you’re sleeping, which means you aren’t getting the therapy you need. A full face mask might be the best choice for you in these situations, as it will stay on your face better. However, if you’re removing the mask as you sleep because your nose is stuffy, ensuring the mask fits well and using a heated humidifier may work for you. If the problem persists, set an alarm for some point in the night so you can check whether or not the mask is still on. Progressively set the alarm later to see when you are removing it.

-Noise Issues

While most new CPAP machines are designed to run almost silently, noise can still cause problems for some users and their significant others sharing a bed with them. Make sure the machine’s air filter is clean and unclogged, because if something is in its way, noise issues can result. Your doctor or CPAP supplier will be able to instruct you on proper cleaning of your device, mask, and hose. If the noise persists, have your doctor or CPAP supplier check the machine to ensure it is working properly. If it is operating normally but noise is still a problem, try using earplugs, a white noise machine, or place the CPAP device further away from your bed. Extra tubing may be available for your device, allowing you to keep the machine far away from bedside.

It can be frustrating when you start CPAP therapy. There are issues that can crop up that prevent you from getting the treatment you need for a good night’s sleep. Hopefully these tips help you steer clear of those troubles or give you some answers as to why you’re having problems.
