The Dangers of Sleep Apnea During Pregnancy
Sleep apnea during pregnancy can be a very dangerous thing.
If you have had a chance to read our last blog, then you already know about the prevalence of sleep apnea in pregnant women and what causes it. If left untreated, obstructive sleep apnea can lead to complications for both the mother and the baby, so if you are a pregnant woman and you feel that you are suffering from obstructive sleep apnea, you should schedule an appointment with your doctor right away.
The Complications for Mothers
There are many complications during pregnancy that can be caused by obstructive sleep apnea. High blood pressure, pulmonary blood clots and increased preeclampsia are just a few of them. It is also important to note that pregnant women who have obstructive sleep apnea are three times more likely to need a Cesarean section.
The Complications for Babies
Due to low oxygen reserves, there are many issues that can arise for the bay when the mother has obstructive sleep apnea. Newborns with mothers who have sleep apnea have a higher risk for breathing problems, and they are more likely to spend time in the neonatal intensive care unit.
If you think that you may have obstructive sleep apnea, contact your doctor right away. Although the majority of pregnant women can treat sleep apnea with simple lifestyle changes, CPAP or BiPAP therapy may also be required. If that is the case, shop our used BiPAP and CPAP machines. Please stay tuned for our next blog to learn about sleep techniques that may help with mild sleep apnea during pregnancy.
