When to Replace Your CPAP Equipment

Neglecting to maintain your CPAP equipment can be dangerous.

Did you know that, if you don’t keep your CPAP equipment clean and properly maintained, it could actually make you sick? Although cleaning your CPAP equipment on a weekly basis can go a long way in keeping you healthy, it’s also important to replace equipment at the proper times. Here is your CPAP equipment replacement schedule:

Every Month

The filter in your CPAP machine needs to be replaced on a monthly basis. If you don’t replace your filter monthly, allergens can build up inside of it and make you sick. If you use a nasal pillows mask, the pillows, or cushions, should also be inspected on a monthly basis. If you notice any signs of cracking, stiffness or discoloration, replace your mask.

Every Three Months

Thoroughly inspect your CPAP mask every three months. If, thanks to your excellent cleaning skills, your mask appears to be in good shape still, you can keep using it until it starts to wear out. However, if you notice discoloration, or your mask is torn or bent, it’s time to get it replaced. As a general rule, your tubing should also be replaced every three months, but keep an eye on it. If it starts to looks cloudy or opaque, or you notice small tears between the coils, replace it sooner.

Every Six Months

If you use a CPAP humidifier, check the water chamber every six months. If the chamber has become discolored or cloudy, it’s time to replace it. You should also inspect your chinstrap and headgear. Does the velcro or elastic appear to be worn out? If so, it’s time to invest in some new headgear.

Every Three to Seven Years

Due to daily use, your CPAP machine itself will eventually need to be replaced as well. Most CPAP machines will last for five to seven years, and your insurance company will typically cover replacing your machine every five years.
